The Merit of Sahoor (Pre-dawn meal)-II

Anas ibn Maalik may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said, “Eat the Sahoor (pre-dawn meal). Surely, there is blessing in [having] Sahoor.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
He, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), also pointed out, as related by ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas may Allaah be pleased with him: “The difference between our fast and that of the People of the Book is Sahoor.”[Muslim]
Al-‘Irbaadh ibn Saariyah may Allaah be pleased with him relates that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), invited him to the Sahoor, saying, “Come to the blessed morning meal.”[Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa’i, Ibn Khuzaymah, Saheeh]
Moreover, Al-Miqdaam ibn Ma‘deekarib may Allaah be pleased with him reports the injunction of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): “Eat the Sahoor, as it is a bountiful meal.”[An-Nasaa’i]
The word Sahoor comes from its Arabic root “Sahar”, which refers to the last part of the night [that just precedes dawn].
Al-Khattaabi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) called the Sahoor, the morning meal, because it helps a person fast during the day, so it is as if he has eaten in the morning.”
Benefits and rulings [derived from these Hadeeths]:
1.     The Sahoor is confirmed to be a blessed meal, as Allaah the Almighty sanctifies whatever He Wills.
2.     The scholars unanimously agreed that the Sahoor is recommended and not obligatory; yet, it is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the fast of the Muslim Ummah (nation).
3.     The blessings of Sahoor include:
-       It constitutes compliance with the commandments of Sharee‘ah (Islamic jurisprudence), as the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), ordered us to partake in this meal. Certainly, obedience to him, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), leads to prosperity in this world and the Hereafter.
-       Eating the Sahoor is a form of stark nonconformity with the People of the Book, who do not normally have this meal. Certainly, acting contrary to the People of the Book is one of the main principles of our religion, as it is prohibited for a Muslim to behave like them in any way or concerning any affair, including their rituals and particular manners and traditions.
-       Having the Sahoor strengthens the fasting person and enables him to worship Allaah The Almighty during the day, not to mention, avoid the foul mood caused by hunger and thirst.
-       The one who gets up to eat Sahoor has a better chance than a sleeping person to do Thikr (remembrance of Allaah), ask Allaah The Almighty for clemency and pray to Him at a time when supplications are very likely to be answered. Of course, this is a great advantage, for those who seek forgiveness before daybreak, specifically, are extolled by Allaah The Almighty.
-       The person who wakes up for Sahoor will most likely perform the Fajr (morning) prayer in congregation at the mosque. Perhaps, he may even leave early for the mosque and attain the reward of standing in the first row close to the Imaam (leader in prayer), in addition to that of repeating the Athaan (call for prayer). It also gives one the opportunity to perform the most significant of the stressed Sunnah prayers, which is offered before Fajr. The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), described it as better than this world and all of its pleasures.
-       The one who eats Sahoor may also give some food from his meal in charity or invite someone to eat with him, thus achieving a double reward.
-       Eating the Sahoor is a form of thanking Allaah The Almighty for His Blessings and benefiting from this concession that He Bestowed upon us, for, whilst it was prohibited for nations before us, He allowed us to eat from sunset until dawn.
4.     The Muslim should be keen on observing this great act of Sunnah, especially since the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), instructed, “Do not leave it.”Moreover, one should do it seeking the reward of Allaah The Almighty and with a good intention present in his heart, rather than eating Sahoor out of habit.
5.     The aforementioned Hadeeths demonstrate the validity of calling others over for Sahoor and answering such an invitation. The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), invited Al-‘Irbaadh ibn Saariyah may Allaah be pleased with him to have Sahoor with him, saying, “Come to the blessed meal.”
6.     Al-Khattaabi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “This proves that Islam is the religion of facilitation and it contains no unbearable duties. The People of the Book were banned from eating once they slept after Iftaar [meal to break the fast] until dawn. Allaah The Almighty eased this matter for us, Saying (What means): {and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread (of night).} [Quran 2:187]”
Hence, we thank Allaah The Almighty abundantly for His countless blessings.

The Merit of Sahoor (Pre-dawn meal) - I

Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudri may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said, “Eating the Sahoor (pre-dawn meal) is a blessed act. So, do not neglect it even if you take just a gulp of water, because Allaah The Almighty praises those who partake in the pre-dawn meal and His angels ask forgiveness for them." [Ahmad]
Moreover, 'Abdullaah ibn Al-Haarith relates from one of the Companions of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), that he said: “I entered the house of the Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) whilst he was having the Sahoor. He said,‘Indeed, the Sahoor is a blessing that Allaah has granted you, so do not disregard it.’ [An-Nasaa‘i and Ahmad]
In fact, the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), even supplicated, as reported by Abu Suwayd may Allaah be pleased with him: “O Allaah! Extol and be Kind to those who eat Sahoor.”
Additionally, ‘Ubaadah ibn Nasiyy narrates his, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), instructions: “Do not neglect the Sahoor even if it is water, as it is said that it is a bountiful meal.”[Ibn Abi ‘Aasim]
As mentioned above, Ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him reports that the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), said, “Allaah The Almighty commends those who consume the pre-dawn meal and His angels seek pardon for them.” [Ibn Hibbaan]
He, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), also specified, as Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him recounts: "The best Sahoor for the believer is dates."[Abu Daawood, Ibn Hibbaan, Saheeh -Albaani]
Benefits and rulings [derived from these Hadeeths]:
1.     The merit of Sahoor is a blessing and a concession bestowed by Allaah The Almighty upon us. Thus, we have to thank Him for it.
2.     Allaah The Almighty praises and shows compassion to those who join in the pre-dawn meal and His ‎angels beseech Him for their forgiveness.
3.     The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), particularly forbade neglecting the Sahoor and this confirms its importance.
4.     The Sahoor meal may be with the least thing, such as a gulp of water, according to the apparent meaning of the Hadeeths.
5.     The best food for Sahoor, however, is dates, as the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ), admired that.
6.     The Muslim should be keen on doing this great act of Sunnah by having the Sahoor, even with little food or water.

The gates of virtue during Ramadhaan

The gates of virtue during Ramadhaan

The month of Ramadhaan is the month of virtue and righteousness. Due to the virtue of its period, the deeds performed during it are also treated differently. People are more eager to be virtuous during this month than any other month of the year. There are many righteous deeds a Muslim can perform during this blessed month, and the following are some suggested deeds:
Sincerity: Allaah Says (what means): “And they were not commanded except to worship Allaah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give Zakaah. And that is the correct religion.” [Quran 98: 5]
Hastening in breaking the fast:Sahl Ibn Sa’d may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “The people will continue to be on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast”[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Breaking the fast by eating dates:Sulaymaan Ibn 'Amr may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If one of you is fasting, he should break his fast with dates. If dates are not available, then with water, for water is purifying. ”[At-Tirmithi]
Exerting extra effort in supplications:The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Three supplications are answered without doubt. The supplication of the fasting person, the supplication of the oppressed and the supplication of the traveler.” [Al-Bayhaqi].
Eating Suhoor (i.e. the pre-dawn meal):Anas may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Eat Suhoor, as there is blessings in it”[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Thanking Allaah after eating or drinking:Anas may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Allaah is pleased with the slave who thanks Him (i.e., says Al-hamdu lillah) when he eats and thanks Him when he drinks”[Muslim]
Guarding ones tongue and remaining silent:Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Let he who believes in Allaah and the Last Day say something good or remain silent”[Muslim]. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: “Fasting is not to refrain from eating and drinking, rather one should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: `I am fasting. I am fasting `” [Ibn Hibbaan]
Going early to the mosque and waiting for the next prayer:Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Should I not direct you to something by which Allaah obliterates the sins and elevates (your) ranks.” They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allaah". He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Performing ablution properly, even in difficulty, frequently going to the mosque, and waiting eagerly for the next prayer after a prayer is over; indeed, that is Ar-Ribaat (i.e. equivalent to its reward), indeed, that is Ar-Ribaat (guarding the front lines of the Muslim army)” [Muslim]. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Everyone among you will be deemed to be occupied in prayer constantly so long as the prayer detains him (from worldly concerns), and nothing prevents him from returning to his family but prayer.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Spending charity:Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “He who gives in charity the value of a date which he legally earned, and Allaah accepts only that which is pure, Allaah accepts it with His Right Hand and fosters it for him, as one of you fosters his pony, until it (i.e. the spent charity) becomes like a mountain”[Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
Encouraging others to spend:Allaah Says (what means): “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression” [Quran 5: 2]
Arranging for lectures:Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If anyone calls others to follow right guidance, his reward will be equivalent to those who follow him (in righteousness) without their reward being diminished in any respect, and if anyone invites others to follow error, the sin, will be equivalent to that of the people who follow him (in sinfulness) without their sins being diminished in any respect”[Muslim]
Performing the ‘Eed prayer:Abu Sa’eed may Allaah be pleased with him reported: “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to come out on the ‘Eed day after Ramadhaan, and the first thing he would do was to perform the ‘Eed prayer” [Al-Bukhaari]
These were some of the gates towards virtue that one can perform during this blessed month, so be keen to accumulate as much reward as you possibly can, because this could be the last year you witness this month. Take advantage of this chance and put forth what you would like to see on the Day of Account. Allaah Says (what means): “The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allaah warns you of Himself, and Allaah is Kind to [His] slaves.” [Quran 3: 30]
